With Halloween, the pointless, consumerist fad that it is, just around the corner I thought that it’d be a good idea to collate a list containing ten of the coolest characters in cinema that I feel would make a great costume.
Just a quick note, there aren’t any particularly scary, horror movie characters in this list but that’s my fault as I haven’t seen many horror flicks.
Anyway, without any further ado, let’s begin…
Appearances: Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2
Portrayed by: Chloe Grace Moretz
Memorable Quote: “Show’s over motherfuckers” *shoots camera*
Starting off as one of the supporting characters in Kick-Ass, she quickly takes over the mantle of the most bad-ass ‘superhero’ in that film and fights quite like no other character I’ve seen making full use of a massive arsenal of guns and several forms of martial arts. She is also the biggest fan of the colour purple I have ever come across so if you’re looking to replicate her look best pick up a purple wig first and foremost!
9. Jack Sparrow
Appearances: The Pirates of the Caribbean series
Portrayed by: Johnny Depp
Memorable Quote: “But why is the Rum gone?”
This is a pirate like no other. Without any real direction or plan, the endeavours of Captain Jack Sparrow strangely all seem to succeed despite the fact that most of the time he just runs around like a headless chicken on speed. To pull off this look, a lot of hair (real or fake) is required, whether it be for Sparrow’s signature facial hair or his endless mane of dreadlocks.
8. Rocky Balboa
Appearances: The Rocky series
Portrayed by: Silvestre Stallone
Memorable Quote: “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward… that’s how winning is done.”
The boxing film legend famed for his inspirational speeches, knock-out-blow montages and over the top patriotism (especially in Rocky 4) is next on the list as his savage, hard-hitting, win-at-all-costs attitude has made Rocky Balboa the quintessential image of sport in cinema. Boxing gloves and a long black wig are what’s needed to recreate the iconic look of Silvestre Stallone’s character. Red hand-band optional.
Appearances: The X-Men series
Portrayed by: Ian McKellan and Michael Fassbender
Memorable Quote: Groundskeeper: “Excuse me, can I help you?”
Magneto: “No, you can’t.” *Lifts stadium into the sky*
Whether it be Ian McKellan or Michael Fassbender playing the master of metal, Magneto is certainly one of the coolest villains in the superhero/mutant genre. My man-crush on Michael Fassbender has in no way influenced me adding him onto this list though, not even slightly. A maroon helmet and cape combination is the key to unlocking this memorable look, a passable Fassbender impression will also go a long way.
Appearances: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Portrayed by: Daisy Ridley
Memorable Quote: *To Kylo Ren* “You’re a monster.”
The newest protagonist in the Star Wars saga has been an instant hit with fans of the film, of all ages too. It’s a refreshing sight to see a well-rounded and independent female character introduced into the Star Wars universe, a place where men previously ruled the roost. Rey is a character who’s costume requires protection from the sun and sand of Jakku and to recreate it you’ll need some versatile scavenger-esque robes/rags.
5. Marty McFly and Doc Brown
Appearances: The Back to the Future series
Portrayed by: Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd
Memorable Quote: “Great Scott!”
The crazed look of Doc Brown with his dishevelled hair and lab-coat paired with the sleeveless puffer-jacket-wearing Marty McFly have become synonymous with the Back to the Future trilogy. This iconic double act’s appearance would make the perfect costume for a duo to wear and is made complete with the added Delorean accessory, sold separately.
4. James Bond
Appearances: Literally Every James Bond Movie, you must’ve seen at least one
Portrayed by: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig
Memorable Quote: “Vodka Martini shaken, not stirred.”
The epitome of cool, James Bond has been and will always be the image of style and chic. Whether it be his immaculately fitting suits or his vast array of expensive cars, the various incarnations of 007 have always oozed an aura of cool-ness unrivalled in the world of film. All that is needed for this look is an overly-expensive suit and a Walther PPK pistol.
3. Darth Vader
Appearances: Star Wars: Episodes III-VI and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Portrayed by: Hayden Christensen (Episode III) David Prowse and James Earl Jones (voice)
Memorable Quote: “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
Possibly the greatest villain in cinema history, Darth Vader and his iconic breathing have always been a popular choice for convention goers and halloween enthusiasts. It’s no surprise either with this methodical masked menace. His cool, calm and collected demeanour is the reason he has become so feared and revered.
2. The Joker
Appearances: Tim Burton’s Batman, The Dark Knight, Suicide Squad
Portrayed by: Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto
Memorable Quote: “Wanna know how I got these scars?”
The Joker has become the typical villain in the DC universe, often facing off against the caped-crusader that is Batman. The way he handles himself, through sheer madness and chaos is unlike any character seen in the superhero genre, every move he makes is seemingly done to invoke fear and panic into those he targets. To master the look of The Joker, what you’ll need is some green hair-dye, a fancy purple suit and the typical clown make-up. However, due to the various iterations of the character, a degree of individuality can be added to the costume.
1. Han Solo
Appearances: The Original Star Wars Trilogy , Star Wars: Force Awakens and Standalone Han Solo Movie
Portrayed by: Harrison Ford
Memorable Quote: “I know.”
Harrison Ford immaculately plays the smuggling scoundrel throughout the original trilogy and The Force Awakens with a devilish charm and wickedly dry sense of humour. The coolest man from a galaxy far, far away is one of the key reasons behind the franchise’s success, with the character offering a degree of realism in the sci-fi universe that allowed audiences to relate to the film. Solo’s look is quite a simple one, with an unbuttoned white shirt and a black waist-coat (or leather jacket) being the necessary apparel of the scruffy-looking nerfherder.
So there we have it, a list in no way Halloween related, but hopefully useful to those of you wanting to come up with ideas for costumes for events and conventions.
